May 12, 2026: Driving the Kenai Penisula

The chickens at the hostel are egg layers. One always needs to label their food so this egg belongs to Amy.
We are waiting for the bus to get our rental car at the airport. Note the hockey players on the ads at Play It Again Sports – appropriate for Alaska.
At the airport where we get our rental car, they had a taxidermy display. This is a one in a million albino beaver.
Our Toyota Rental Conestoga wagon for the day. Avis offered to prepay for gas and charged $4.09/gallon. That is a bargain since the price of regular gas is around $5.29.
We are on the lookout for moose! This sign is encouraging.
Sure enough…there he (or she) is. We have been told that the male loses his antlers every year so you can’t tell from a distance in the spring.
A lot of moose are killed every year on the road. Moose don’t move for anyone.
So many acres of burned trees from a forest fire.
We arrived at the charming fishing town of Homer. These stores are on a long spit and it is the place to be.
There are lots of apartments with amazing views.
There are mountains rising up from the ocean no matter which direction that you look.
So many fun gathering places that are just starting to open for the season which is when the sandhill cranes arrive.
“I walked into the Salty Dog Saloon and what did I see? A whole lot of dollar bills looking at me.”
We left our mark on a dollar bill and attached it on the wall of the pool room commemorating the location where Amy and I played a very competitive game of Eight Ball.
I would love to witness the Blessing of the Fleet.

We LOVE Homer. My nephew Wes and his family have lived there for about 15 years. He owns a float plane business that takes tourists up for bear watching flights into state and national parks.
I too have hung a dollar bill on the wall in the Salty Dog Saloon. They said they take them all down once a year during the winter and donate the monies to a local charity. All those dollar bills really add up.
Enjoy that beautiful state with sweet Amy.
