May 11, 2026: Anchorage

My husband Rob and I went to Anchorage in 2021. Our daughter, Julie, was an assistant volleyball coach at University of Indianapolis. They were asked to come to the University of Alaska for a tournament. We jumped at the chance to watch her and the team.

I remembered so much and it was fun to be Amy’s tour guide. I didn’t blog about it then.

Anchorage has one of the highest tide differential from 11 feet to 45 feet.

Today was a beautiful sunny day so we wanted to be outside and go hiking. We took an Uber to the start of the 10 mile Coastal Trail.

Amy was my sherpa and carried my day pack.
Here is a closeup of our Uber Drivers Emotional Support Animal.
Amy showed me how to keep my shoes strings from coming untied. This was helpful since we took about 29,000 steps!
Amy spotted this sleeping moose. At first she thought that it was dead. We were told that they eat so much that their body temperature gets dangerously high so they lay down on the permafrost to cool down.
Funny sign!!

When we returned back to the hostel, Amy commented that the inside of her shoes were so warm that she could ripen an avocado in them. 😂

We needed to rest our weary bones and tired muscles so the menfolk at the hostel fired up the wood burning sauna.
I enjoyed watching them in their many attempts to split the wood.
Later we had fun teaching my new friends how to play Five Crowns until midnight! It was difficult to stay quiet since quiet hours started at 11 which is about when the sun goes down.
