My daughter, Amy, and I have talked about a Mother-Daughter Trip for many years. Now is the time. We are so excited and much of the fun is in the planning.
Years ago, we wanted to go to the Middle East and live amongst the Bedouin shepherds and their sheep. There are so many references to sheep in the Bible that we don’t really understand as Americans. Jesus is the Lamb of God and He is the Good Shepherd and his sheep know his voice. However, we were not able to find a group that provided this experience.
Next, we were going to attend Burning Man in Black Rock Desert in Nevada. I was enthralled with the idea of building a community from scratch. My mother was a sociologist and she would find it interesting as well. What does one need to establish a community? It was also a chance to deliver the gospel to attendees, many of which are searching. We even went as far as renting a van. (I still have a deposit on a van in Las Vegas that I can use in the future!) We started to plan. We even registered for the ticket drop but were not selected.
I think that God was in it as that year and the next had major problems due to the weather. Muddy one year, dust storms the next. Now I am older and sleeping in a sleeping bag and making meals in primitive conditions, no longer holds any appeal.
What’s a mother (and daughter) to do? I told Amy that we need to go on a trip before she gets married…not that we have a candidate at this time. Maybe we need to take this trip first!!
So we are going to Alaska for 16 days. We start in Anchorage, take a train to Denali for hiking, drive the Kenai Peninsula, and then board a cruise along the inside passage that ends in Vancouver, BC. We will see glaciers, ride on seaplanes and pan for gold.
Rob is on his own and was not allowed to plan this trip. Amy and I kept him in the dark. He did insist on coordinating our flights. I fly to Chicago to meet Amy and then we fly together to Anchorage.
Unfortunately, my first flight is 6 a.m. so I had to get up at 3:30 which is 12:30a.m. in Alaska. I am sure that I will be in a daze for days.
While I am gone, Rob is going on a meat fiesta since I don’t fix meat dishes at home. He has a rasher of bacon in the freezer and will stop at the butcher for prime cuts of meat.

I arrived in Chicago about sunrise and was totally exhausted. I got off the plane, took ten steps and collapsed on a nearby couch and didn’t move for hours. I told Amy to just come find me at the gate. (She has pictures on her blog: GoAmyGo)

Amy and I are trying to use our phones as little as possible and use them mostly for directions, buses, and photos.
I plan to spend as much time in Alaskan nature and to experience a memorable trip with Amy. My posts will have pictures of Amy. Her blog will have pictures of me!! We are like bookends!! Same activity with different perspectives.
