February 2, 2026: La Romana

Gotta love these all-inclusive resorts. I still have some stiffness from our 4D movie, and Rob agreed to go with me to an early morning stretching class.

On our walk there, we saw two fully clothed pool guys cleaning the very large pool.
This was the moment Rob found out that it wasn’t a stretching class. It was a yoga class.
These people were doing yoga on paddle boards!!! We walked quickly through here lest they ask us to join.
Next it’s Aqua Zumba. Every step involved hip movements. Perhaps the merengue class that we took last night will kick in … and I do mean kick!!
After class, we swam out to the rope, a right of passage in this big pool. I took my camera in its waterproof case. (I had to edit out the picture of my thumb.)
Mi amor en el paraíso.
These girls were making an impressive castle. My necklace of shells broke so I donated them to these ecstatic interior designers.
My grandchildren are fan fans…the bigger the better. This is the winner so far in our “fanily”

Everyone is very friendly and allows us to communicate in Spanish. When we pass by, they put their hand on their heart and greet us. If it is just !Hola! or ¡Buenos días! or ¡Buen día!, one keeps walking. However, if you get a ¿Cómo están? it requires a response.

See if you can pronounce his name? YEIFRY (Answer at the bottom of this post.)

The climate here is very mild. There is often a gentle breeze. We only saw one insect. It was a small housefly. For a while, he became a pet in our room and walked more than he flew.  Rob remembered a NO PET policy. And that was the end of our short term resident.

Evening Entertainment

Circus Night had lots of fire dances. It started to rain which put a damper on the show.
Dominican Night showcases their history through dance.  The styles of dance such as pasapíe, mangulina, and bachata were supercharged and originated in the Dominican Republic.

These are some of the songs that they used. Most of them are fast and encourage lots of hip wiggling:

  • Baila La Calle by Omar Acedo
  • Carnaval Dominicano 1a by La Nueva Escuela
  • Tus Besos by Juan Luis Guerra
  • Levántate by Hector Acosta
Pitbull was my favorite impersonator! The crowd enjoyed singing along to Fireball.

Celebrity Night featured Madonna, Donna Summer, Pitbull, Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, MC Hammer, Rhianna, Jennifer Lopez, and Shakira.

What about sports? I thought that soccer ⚽ would be #1, but it was 4th. Can you guess the most popular sports in the Dominican Republic?

  • #1 Baseball (Former St Louis Cardinals star Albert Pujols is from the Dominican Republic.)
  • #2 Basketball
  • #3 Dominos (I didn’t know this was a sport.)
  • #4 Football aka soccer

Adiós a la República Dominicana. Gracias por los recuerdos!
