August 8, 2025: Homeward Bound

Our Grand Tour has come to an end, and it was so much fun. However, we are tired and ready to get back to a normal retired pace by the beach.

We learned a lot about the world and a lot about ourselves. On this trip, our bags were a little heavier, and we went to bed a little earlier.

I started a list of things that I wanted to do when I got home; things that I observed and want to incorporate into my life… I was up to 75 items. Some are one time things; others are an ongoing process.

Here is a sample:

  • Listen to music during breakfast, especially opera.
  • Wear perfume every day, not just for special occasions.
  • Become fluent in another language: Spanish. I am amazed at all the Europeans who can speak multiple languages.
  • Accessorize with jewelry, belts, and scarves. People dress nicer in Europe. At home flip flops and pajama pants have become ubiquitous.
  • Swim.
  • Lunch with friends at least once a week.
  • Give a cool name to our apartment.
  • Learn more history from other parts of the world.

Time to fly!!

This airport advertisement for plastic surgery made me laugh. If they can turn a raisin into a grape, think what they can do with people!!
These airplane windows roll down from the top. However, this window would not stay up. She tried to block out the bright sun with the safety card, but it kept sliding down. I offered her my wadded up chips wrapper and told her to jam it in the bottom. It worked!!
Waiting at this gate in JFK was an army of wheelchair people. Perhaps they are attending a wheelchair convention or trying to board early in order to get a good seat!!

We left Stockholm at 10:30am and arrived in Norfolk at 6pm. Of course, there was a time change of six hours.  However, our daughter and granddaughter were coming to visit for the weekend and we were to pick them up at 9pm.

We raced home in an Uber, unpacked, started laundry, made sure that the car would start, and bought a few groceries before returning to the airport. Dejá Vu!!!

We tried to open our storage unit at our apartment building since my computer and other needed items were in there. The lock was jammed. (It turns out that it was a break-in and my computer was stolen.)
A pile of mail had a belated paper birthday bouquet waiting for me.
A moonlit night greeted us on our first beach stroll.
A beautiful sunset was shared by three generations.
It is good to be home.

Welcome home, Brenda and Rob! We continue to be in awe of how much you saw and experienced. While I confess that I haven’t read every single blog post (yet), I am so impressed that you did such an amazing job documenting your adventures. It’s not easy to juggle “living” the experience” and writing about it. I managed to keep a handwritten journal during our much shorter excursion, but it is certainly not in a publishable form. Well done!
