July 18, 2025: Statues

Moss is known for its many statues.

Following below is our favorite statue here and the reason for our visit. Moss, Norway, is the sister city to my current home of Virginia Beach, VA.

A horrible shipwreck with loss of life occurred off the shore of Virginia Beach in 1891. The Dictator was caught in a hurricane. The lifesaving service was able to rescue a few of the crew, but the captain’s wife and four-year-old son perished.

The ship was built in Moss. The residents of Moss took up a collection to cast two identical bronze statues called the Norwegian Lady. One stands in Virginia Beach and looks toward Moss, and the other stands in Moss and looks toward Virginia Beach. I wrote about the annual commemoration ceremony in Virginia Beach on April 27. When Rob told me that we were going to Norway, I asked if we were going anywhere near Moss so we put it into our itinerary.

The statue is near the boardwalk like the Virginia Beach statue.
At the Moss Museum of History and Industry, we see a model of a bark similar to the Dictator.
Burial at Sea by Carl Sundt-Hansen. This was in the National Museum in Oslo. It looked like a photograph and each expression was different.

The audio guide said that it wasn’t unusual for a wife to sail with her husband, the captain. This explained why the wife and child of the captain were on the boat. I was amazed that she took black mourning clothes with her. A preminition or did everyone take mourning clothes on trips … because it was dangerous??

Exhibit about The Future

Vertical farming makes sense especially in urban areas. Water usage is maximized as the top tray is watered and it trickles down to the others. Weather and insect damage can be thwarted.
Robots are the future. One could say that it is already here by doing repetitive tasks.

This is an interesting article about robots used by Amazon. Robots

Below is a picture of three scenarios as it relates to climate by 2050. Which scenario do you think we are headed for?

#1: We solve the climate crisis by becoming green industrial cities specializing in carbon capture and storage. The world will survive the worst climate changes. After some initial hesitation, we will manage the green transition and world temperature increase will stabilize at 1.5 degrees.
#2: We are trying to reach the climate goals to escape the worst consequences. Only after spring has become synonymous with floods, summer with heat waves and winter with rain, the world realizes that we need to make an effective plan for green transition. People are trying to establish a green industry, but it is in the late stages of having much of an impact. Even though we avoid the darkest future scenarios, we still experience political instability, storms, and extreme weather.
#3: We do nothing and eventually have to pay the price for it. We drive petrol cars and fly to other places. Temperatures rise by over three degrees, and even though we notice the changes, we do nothing about them. Quality of life, life expectancy, and biodiversity are declining. People are being displaced, poverty is increasing, and there is water shortage and political chaos.

I know that I want my children and grandchildren to be able to witness the natural world as I know it today.
