June 24, 2025: Ciao, Italian Riviera!

We left Italy for the small country of San Marino. Here were our experiences throughout the day:

Regional Train: Vernazza to Monterosso – 3 minutes. Caio, Vernazza!

This train number is 666! Should we be nervous? There is a lot happening in the world. Bunker busting bombs? Overtourism? Mercurial U.S. President?

I fell asleep until I awoke to a tantrum outburst from a cute but loud preschooler. This was the first of many.

Frecciarossa High Speed Train: Milan to Rimini – 2 hours and 6 minutes after a 40-minute layover in Milan.

Rob was trying to put my bag overhead, and my full metal water bottle came tumbling down near a lady … fortunately, it hit the armrest, but it made a huge bang. She said something, but it wasn’t English!!

This couple was German Germaphobes. They used so many sanitizing wipes. Note the wipe under her elbow on the armrest. Maybe that’s the origin of the name Germans!!

Bus: Rimini to San Marino – 45 minutes. There was a 45-minute layover, and it gave us enough time to take a short walk to the bus. Ciao, Rimini!

After 45 minutes of driving uphill, we arrived in the historic part of San Marino. Ciao (in this case, hello), San Marino!!

Our first sighting of the historic three towers of San Marino.
The place is devoid of people. It was quite a change for us.

A straight uphill drag with suitcases to our hotel was our final destination. (We learned later that there was a small train that takes people up and down and runs every 15 minutes until 9:30pm.)
