June 20, 2025: Train Strike

We left Naples with a few extra pounds and headed to Pisa. Rob will “lean in” to his third trip to Pisa. He wanted to make sure that I witnessed one of the world’s greatest marvels.

High Speed Train

I clocked this high speed train at 153 miles per hour. The ride was very smooth, and we were in an air conditioned, silent car and arrived in Florence at 12:01.

When the train goes through a tunnel, our ears experience pressure. They don’t pop, but it is the same sensation that one experiences when diving into deep water and releases when one comes back to the surface.

Now, we didn’t know about the train strike today, but we were well aware by the time that we tried to board a train in Florence.

First we went to platform 7 and waited to board a train. The train was there, but we weren’t allowed to board. Then it was canceled.
Next we asked a train helper with a red vest which train to take. He directed us to 1A, and we waited to board a train. The train was there, but we weren’t allowed to board. Then it was canceled.
We read the Departures board and ran to Platform 13 and waited to board a train. The train was there, but we weren’t allowed to board. Then it was canceled.
Look at all of these cigarettes butts discarded onto the track tracks.
At this point, we realized that there weren’t going to be any trains so we decided to get a taxi to our next destination.

We stood in another line for a taxi. The taxi drivers were doing a strapping business. Would someone take us 70 miles away to Pisa? It was going to cost about $250. Yikes!! But Eureka … we are on our way.

It is hard to walk but maybe even harder to stand with heavy backpacks in summer heat for 4½ hours. I fell right asleep in the air conditioned taxi and even snorted awake.

We were late for our entry tickets to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. We had purchased 4:30pm entry. Fortunately our hotel was nearby and we arrived about 5:45pm. The ticket taker at the tower was sympathetic and let us right in.
