May 27, 2025: Go With It

As we started the day in Prizren for a visit to the Albanian League Museum, we were ushered into a celebration of one of the fallen heroes of Kosovo in their quest for independence.

There were speeches, dancing, dignitaries, family members, and dramatic readings.

Remzi Ademaj died while fighting for Kosovo’s Independence. He was one of the most prominent patriots, ideologists, fighters, and commanders in all of Kosovo. He is buried in the Martyrs Cemetery where all of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) are buried.

God Bless America

I was sitting next to a man at this celebration. When I told him that I was American, he put into his Google translate: “We are forever grateful to America for what she did to help us become a nation.”

Prior to our trip, I wondered how we as Americans would be perceived and treated. People are pretty understanding that citizens don’t necessarily reflect the positions of their leaders.

That being said, Kosovo LOVES America and considers us their strongest ally. We led the way militarily in Kosovo’s independence from Serbia. Not every nation recognizes Kosovo as a nation still to this day. This made me wonder if Kosovo is allowed to participate in the Olympics. Yes, and they have won three gold medals, all in judo.

Mother Teresa Museum

Just opened in February, we came upon a unique museum celebrating the life of an incredibly compassionate person. We need more like Mother Teresa.

Mother Teresa won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. No one knows the location of her medal today. We will go to the Nobel Prize Museum in Stockholm and inquire.
Mother Teresa started a movement of compassion that has reached the entire world.

Archeological Museum of Prizren

Each room showed artifacts unearthed from different archeological sites and eras in Kosovo.
These cannonballs might be considered dirty bombs. Each cannonball had smaller balls inside.
This case showed photos of artifacts that were on loan to Serbia and have never been returned. Kosovo has photographic evidence and signed loan papers, but Serbia refuses to return them.

Sinan Pasha Mosque

This centrally located mosque was built in 1615.
Read the shocking top line. I wore a hat … plus my other clothes!!
This is the view of the exquisite ceiling. To avoid neck strain, it was recommended prior to this trip to bring a hand mirror to Europe since one will be looking at a lot of beautiful ceilings.
The uppermost painting on the wall above shows the Blue Mosque located in Istanbul. The Sinan Pasha mosque was built roughly around the same time as the Blue Mosque, but the interior paintings here were done in the 19th century.

The clock tower is part of this museum. We couldn’t resist a climb to the top.

I had never seen stairs like this with a different level for each foot. It was a little disorienting.
A zoomed-in view of the castle from the clock tower.
This is a Serbian Orthodox Church and UNESCO site. Nothing is being done to preserve it. That makes sense as Kosovo is not likely to spend money to restore it.

We went to a family-run traditional restaurant and ordered a meal called Vekshi Me Shpate prepared in the old, unique way. They explain it in their words:

OUR ILLYRIAN ANCESTORS HAD A SPECIAL ART OF COOKING. ILLYRIANS SUCCEEDED IN HELPING SPARTA AND TROY IN WARS. OF COURSE THEY ALSO TOOK THIS SPECIALTY DISH THERE. CLAY POTS WERE STUFFED WITH VEGETABLES AND MEAT, THROWN INTO THE CAMPFIRE, COVERED WITH EMBERS AND BROUGHT TO THE BOIL. AFTER COOKING, THE POTS WERE BEHEADED WITH A SWORD AND THE FOOD WAS TAKEN OUT AND EATEN.

THE TEMPERATURES EXCEED 1000 DEGREES CELSIUS. THE TASTE IS UNIQUE AND HAS A SPECIAL AROMA. CONTENTS ARE ORGANIC PRODUCTS FROM THE REGION SUCH AS RED PEPPERS, GREEN PEPPERS, YOUNG ONION SEEDS, TENDER VEAL, AND WILD HERBS FROM THE VALEY. ENJOY THE PAST WITH A UNFORGETTABLE MEAL.

P.S., I posted this video on my YouTube channel two days ago for this post and have had 83,000 views so far!! I’ve apparently gone VIRAL!!
