Sunday, March 3, 2024: Day 391: Sunday

My passion is to be with my tribe for fellowship on Sunday mornings, but it wasn’t meant to be today. The only two shuttles from Moorea to Tahiti are in the afternoon. Our shuttle came to pick us up at noon. Our driver had been to church on another part of Moorea before picking us up. She said that her church overlooks Cook’s Bay, and they can see the beautiful water and a variety of boats during the service. Very inspirational!!

An internet search tells us eighty-five percent of Tahitians identify as Christian.

On the island of Tahiti in the city of Papeete, there is a historic church called the Protestant Church of Paofai.

The first missionaries arrived in 1797 from the London Missionary Society. After 1815 the majority of the population identified themselves with Christianity, and formed this national Protestant church which spread from Tahiti to the four archipelagos. The official founding date of the church is 1815.

All of the women dress in white lacy dresses and wear beautiful white straw hats. All of the men wear blue trousers and white shirts. They sit in groups because after each reading a different group responds by singing Acapella in Polynesian. The angelic sounds and harmonization illustrate their devoutness.
