Saturday, February 17, 2024: Day 376 – So Long, Kiwis

Before we leave New Zealand, let’s talk about learning the Māori language. New Zealand seems like a bilingual culture.

Pākehā is a white New Zealander as opposed to a Māori person.

This was an advertisement at the ATM.
This is an educational placemat. There are even two Māori TV stations. Māori is an optional language in school, or students can elect to be fully immersed in a Māori school. I think if we stayed here longer, we would be able to speak Māori.

We left Queenstown for Hobart, Tasmania, Australia by way of Sydney. Tasmania was not on our original around the world plan. However, it takes such a long time to get to this side of the world that we decided to include it. Often people will say, “You can do that the next time you come here.” Uhh! No.

I have decided that most Kiwis don’t understand each other. There is a lot of leaning in and asking for people to repeat what they say. It’s not just us. Many times I have had to say,”I know that we are both speaking English, but I don’t understand what you are saying.”

Apparently, there was a world mountain bike race as there are many oversized baggages.
Here is a mother-daughter duo who just attended the Taylor Swift concert.
Taylor Swift is everywhere. She even has a Little Golden Book!!
When we were boarding, we went outside to board. They opened the front AND the back doors so we could get on the plane faster. How smart!! Until we got on the plane as people were going both ways in the narrow aisle to find their seats.

We had a $15 food allowance, and we ordered from the airplane menu. The catch is you aren’t allowed to leave the plane with any airplane food. After some banana bread, popcorn and Pringles, I purchased the low calorie kids activity kit.

We were greeted at the Hobart International Airport baggage claim by some bronze Tasmanian Devils. We hope to see some live ones while we are here!!
