Tuesday, January 23, 2024: Day 351 – Adventure Quencher

We had to arrive by 7:30am in order to sign all the permission slips for our hike on Mt. Tongariro. Our guide asked if we understood that we were hiking on an active volcano. I don’t remember that, Rob??

They check us out for appropriate gear. If we were lacking, rental equipment was required. We had the option of turning our half day hike into a full day hike. However, rain even heavy rain predictions were in the forecast.

Posing beside a posted warning does not instill conference in this endeavor.

Active volcano, hazard warnings, and reduced visibility with heavy rains are the trifecta for a challenging hiking day…but we were going in!!

Rain clouds lifted to observe a sweeping view of the landscape.
Rob captured this image of a triple waterfall. I was already wet.
Corbin in orange was more of a pace horse than a sheepdog. I am used to the latter.

We opted for the half day as we were cold and soaked to the bone. Corbin said that it was unsafe to continue. No argument there!!

Once back at our hotel, the drying room was our next adventure. Wet clothes are hung in a closed room with a heater on full blast seen in the corner. (I guess being wet happens a lot.)

Today was literally a “wash” but we made the most of swimming in the rain. Our day went from Adventure Quencher to Adventure Drencher!!
