February 17, 2023 – Day 15 – City Palace

Today we had a full day in Udaipur. We visited the City Palace. The palace, overlooking Lake Pichola, is a monumental complex of eleven palaces, courtyards, and gardens. It was built from granite and marble and surrounded by fortified walls.

City Palace is famed for its intricate peacock mosaics.

We saw stunning architecture and amazing views.

Look at this painting from the Palace Museum. In the center with a dark face is Shrinathji, a form of Hindu deity Krishna as a seven-year-old child Balak. He is the central presiding deity of the Vaishnava sect known as the Pushtimarg (the way of grace). In the painting Shrinathji is celebrating the wedding of Prince Bhupal Singh in the 16th century.

The full painting is about 18″ x 24″. Notice the group of figures at the bottom. They are tiny. For the fine work the artist used a magnifying glass and a brush with a single camel’s hair.

I found a new wheelchair for Grandpa.

Jagdish Temple is a large Hindu temple in the middle of Udaipur, just outside of the royal palace. It has been in continuous worship since 1651. Jagdish Temple is a beautiful example of Hindu Iconography, consisting of three stories of hand carved stone, with a steeple nearly 79 feet high. It is the largest temple in Udaipur.

Our guide lives in Udaipur. He took us to his house to meet his family and have tea. It was special.

We went to a studio where a man was painting intricate scenes.

Another day, another wedding. They invited us to stay and dance with them.

The groom was sitting on a horse.

We bought bottled water at this small store several times as we walked back to our hotel.

This building has a wonderful rooftop restaurant …

… where we ate dinner overlooking one of the lakes.

What a nice day in Udaipur!
