We have returned to Anchorage to our original hostel. It was fun to reconnect with the hostel staff/friends. The hostel was packed as the “season” had begun.
We were told that Little Millers Ice Cream is the best ice cream in Alaska…so we asked our Uber driver to take us there, an unusual request for sure.

We catch the train to Whittier where we begin our Alaska cruise.

We learned a lot from the onboard guides. There is a difference in the term Alaska native and native Alaska. Alaska native is an indigenous person and native Alaska is someone who was born in Alaska.
My father-in-law was stationed in Dutch Harbor in WWII but the lower 48 doesn’t know much about Alaska. We are well aware of the Pearl Harbors attack in Hawaii but nothing about the attacks on Attu and Kiska and Dutch Harbors.

Our train goes through a shared tunnel with train and cars so one way has to wait for the tunnel to clear before proceeding.
We were told to never walk on glacial silt because it is like quicksand and when one gets stuck and the tide comes in, one drowns.

I had researched Whittier for a laundry mat so we could start the cruise with a suitcase of clean clothes.
