January 29, 2026: Santo Domingo

Happy Kansas Day to all my childhood friends and family!

Today we are leaving Puerto Rico and taking a 45-minute flight to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. We are sad to leave our travel buddy, Amy. She has a later flight and is headed back to cold Chicago.

Amazing Amy, Research Rob, and Bilingual Brenda make an awesome traveling duo. Let’s do it again!!

When we boarded the plane, a dog sniffed our bags. There must have been 10 agents. I was asked how much money I was carrying. “I have a $20. My husband carries all the rest.”

The plane is freezing. I am glad that I am wearing my winter coat.

When we landed, there was great applause. I understand this to be a tradition in Latin America. I may start doing this on all my flights.

I have seen this word a lot on t-shirts and thought that I would put it in Google translate, and here’s what I learned.

This reminded me of when we were in Spain 25 years ago, I was reading aloud the graffiti words that I saw while riding the subway. A lady heard me and wagged her finger. Oh yeah! I bet those are dirty words.

A cafeteria style restaurant was packed for our first meal in Santa Domingo.
In front of this cathedral was a young girl with a BIG dress having a photo shoot. I would have liked to stick around in order to see her get in a car.
