Today is my birthday. I would have never guessed that I would be spending my birthday in Vernazza, Italy. For lunch, I had testarelli pasta with fresh homemade pesto.
Since I get to call the shots on my birthday, I requested a non-hiking day. We still had train access on the regional train so we headed to a village previously unexplored by us just north of Monterosso called Levanto. I don’t know how cities become part of the five. Perhaps the name can be changed to Sei Terre. It doesn’t sound as good, and somehow I think that Levanto is okay being left out.

Levanto is a laid-back town on the Italian Riviera and is a great place to experience slow travel. In fact Levanto calls itself a citta slow.

Levanto was a pleasant city. There was not a stair to be found. All roads were flat, wide pedestrian-only streets. We saw very few cars and motorcycles. There were definitely more gray haired people here so as a gray haired lady, I fit right in.
The old gray mare, she ain’t what she used to be … sixty-eight years ago.
