Botswana gained its independence from the British 58 years ago. They were previously a protectorate.
Botswana is about the same size as Texas and has a population of 2.5 million people.
Zebra is their national animal. Water lilly is the national flower.

Kori Bustard is the national bird of Botswana. (Fish Eagle is the national bird of Zambia and Zimbabwe. Lilac Breasted Roller is Namibia.)
The colors of the Kori Bustard follow the history of Botswana by having black and white colors. It was almost hunted to extinction and today is highly protected. It is the world heaviest flying bird. The heaviest bird is the ostrich.
The Botswana flag has blue on the top for the beautiful blue African sky and blue on the bottom for their most prized possession: WATER!!

Kori Bustards were hunted for their chicks as a present for the chief. There were thirteen tribes each with their own chief. It was a symbol of power.
The male will puff out his white chest and strut around to impress the females.
